So we bought this for our daughter 2 years ago when she was 8, and she still rereads it (was doing so again today actually). So I asked her today about it, because it seems to have had remarkable staying power for her. She says she loves the pictures, and she really loves the section on tornadoes a lot. She says she does wish it had a little bit more information on them, but that she wouldn't reduce the rating for that. There have been no problems with the binding, or any other aspect of the book, which is awesome because she hasn't quite acquired my gentle touch with books yet.

This book is written on a level that a young child can understand easily. The information is factual and presented in a fun-filled way. I bought it to help a tween increase his knowledge of weather and weather patterns and fear of weather patterns. It has thick glossy pages and is loaded in an eye-appealing way with cool weather facts. It asks a few questions here and there to test the learners retention of the material. I read it too and I enjoyed it. I would repurchase and recommend.

This book is less educational than I'd like - more like a collection of factoids. The book is of the same quality you'd expect from National Geographic in terms of the pictures, etc., just not quite what I was looking for.

Great book. I have 2 apps in the play store with this book's help. HOWEVER as of writing it is a tad dated. There are new ways to setup the library. Some framework has changed. ESPECIALLY Since RoboVM has died (which allows you to port to iPhone - all the alternatives are workarounds I found them cumbersome). If you are pushing for Android/Desktop this book is great. I would recommend Cocos2Dx or SDL or Cordova if you want to do fully cross-platform development.

This "Cook book" is exactly what I was looking for. Many of the online tuts don't give as much detail as this book does and it certainly comes in handy. Unfortunately, like most Java implementations, there is a lot of code to write to do simple things but that's not the fault of the books author.

Covers many topics some of whicb I wish were covered more in depth but it is a cookbook and so contains many snippets of code with a good explanation. I wish the authors would write a more in depth text however. Also libgdx is constantly evolving which makes it difficult to cover nearly every topic but this text does so fairly well.

Great book. The content is well presented, and voluminous. It's a level above the "official" LibGDX book, which I also purchased.

great book for learning everything by yourself

This is the best book that I read for making mobile games. This is a diamond that you must have in your box of books.

First I should mention that it took me a while to decide whether I should start using AndEngine or Libgdx. After serious research my conclusions were that Libgdx is the better option. The reasons are that it’s still being updated and code testing is much faster. At this point the learning resources for Libgdx are basically two – the tutorials on their website and this book. Currently there is only one book more which is said to be outdated. As a beginner I decided to start learning from the book first because books tend to have some structure. And I must say that the book is indeed very well structured and there are a lot of useful details. At first I was expecting to have some problems with comprehending the material but the authors did a very good job in explaining with layman’s terms. If I have to be honest - you can actually feel the amount of work spent on this book. While going through this book, I learned how to work with Libgdx’s 2D API and create complex 2D effects such as particles, shaders, etc. Now I also know how to set up nice background music in my game and how to create a good looking text. There is a lot of material covered on the topic of optimisation which is crucial for smooth running on phones. I think that the tip of the iceberg is the chapter about third-party libraries and extras. It is very useful because it covers the most popular “goodies” used with Libgdx. This includes – multilingual support, skeleton animation, lighting and software architecture. This book is truly a “game development cookbook” because it explains everything needed to build a professionally looking game. I would like to thank the whole team and especially the authors for their amazing work. I recommend this book.

About the Author

Fawwaz Z. Elkarmi is Associate Professor and Deputy Dean at Amman University/Faculty of Engineering, freelance consultant, energy/electricity expert, and trainer. Dr. Elkarmi worked in government, para-government, and private sectors for 25 years in Jordan and 9 years abroad (Kuwait and USA). He holds a Doctor of Engineering degree from Texas A&M University, 1981. Dr. Elkarmi is a registered "Expert" engineer with the Jordan Engineers Association, a Senior Member of IEEE, and a Chartered Engineer with IEE. Moreover, he is a member of the Institute of Management Consultants (IMC) and holds a Certified Management Consultant (CMC) title. Dr. Elkarmi, in addition to teaching full-time, conducts training in Jordan and abroad in strategic planning and business planning, project evaluation, performance improvement, start-up businesses, professional management consulting, electrical system development, tariff studies and investment planning, load research, energy and demand forecasting, demand side management, energy efficiency, energy conservation, environmental impact assessment, process optimization, and new product development. He also provides consultation in business development, feasibility studies, organizational re-engineering, business turnaround, project appraisal, and investment assessment. Dr.Elkarmi served as director for MMIS Management Consultants; General Manager of Arab Development for Food Industries - Free Zone - Zarka; Managing Director, Quality Consultancy Company (QCC); Director, Industry Sector and Mineral Resources at the Higher Council for Science and Technology (HCST); Director, Energy Sector Technologies at the Higher Council for Science and Technology; Acting General Manager (Part-time) for Palestine Industrial Investment Company (PIIC) in Nablus - Palestine; and Director of Planning at the Jordan Electricity Authority. Dr. Elkarmi worked as the Director of "IRADA," which is a project sponsored by the Ministry of Planning for assisting entrepreneurs in establishing their businesses, including the preparation of feasibility studies, business plans, request for financing, and registration procedures.

Nazih M. Abu-Shikhah is an Assistant Professor and currently is the Head of the Department of Electronics and Communications Engineering at Amman University/Faculty of Engineering, freelance consultant, time series analyst, energy/electricity expert, and trainer. Dr. Abu-Shikhah worked in government, para-government, and private sectors for about 20 years in Jordan and abroad (Kuwait and Australia). He holds a Doctor of Engineering degree from Queensland University of Technology, Australia, 2002. Dr. Abu-Shikhah is a registered "Expert" engineer with the Jordan Engineers Association.
